Introduction to Yard Gullies
Yard gullies are an essential component of drainage systems, designed to collect and redirect surface water runoff from yards, car parks, and other areas. These gullies work in tandem with road gullies to provide a comprehensive drainage solution, ensuring that surface water is efficiently managed and directed away from critical areas. Typically made from durable materials like polyethylene or concrete, yard gullies are built to withstand the test of time. Available in various sizes, including the robust 450mm x 750mm, they feature stepped spigot outlets and cut lines for easy pipe connection adjustments. By preventing unpleasant odours and blockages, yard gullies play a crucial role in maintaining the efficiency and hygiene of any drainage system.
Understanding the Importance of Drainage System
A well-designed drainage system is crucial for managing surface water runoff and preventing flooding, erosion, and other environmental hazards. Yard gullies and road gullies are integral to these systems, working together to collect and redirect surface water into a watercourse, storm drain, or other designated areas. This process helps to prevent sediment and debris from entering the watercourse, which can cause blockages and environmental damage. Additionally, a good drainage system prevents the accumulation of surface water, reducing the risk of bacteria growth and unpleasant odours. By installing a comprehensive drainage system that includes both yard gullies and road gullies, property owners can ensure the safe and efficient management of surface water runoff, protecting both their property and the environment.
Materials and Construction
Yard gullies and road gullies are typically made of durable materials such as high-density polyethylene (HDPE) or concrete. HDPE is a popular choice due to its strength, durability, and resistance to corrosion, making it ideal for yard gullies and road gullies alike. Concrete, known for its high strength, is often used for road gullies to withstand heavy traffic loads. The construction of these gullies involves advanced manufacturing techniques like injection moulding and casting, ensuring a robust and long-lasting product. Designed to provide a comprehensive drainage solution, these materials and construction methods make yard gullies and road gullies suitable for a range of applications, including car parks, motorways, and highways.

Road gullies are water management chambers, designed to collect surface water in the street, and carry that water to the underground drainage pipe system, where it is then taken to a watercourse, storm drain or soakaway.
Our team is dedicated to providing exceptional support to help you choose the right road gully for your needs. Up until 1990 or so, road gullies and yard gullies tended to be big items of clay ware, but their inherent fragility was always a problem, which experts have addressed with modern materials. They were slowly replaced with heavy-duty precast concrete elements, which are considerably stronger but also much heavier – requiring serious site equipment to get them located. The larger 450mm diameter units weigh a lot more than just one operative can be reasonably expected to handle, and so they will have to be craned into place by an excavator.
These days, durable road gullies are usually manufactured from plastic, this makes them much lighter, much more cost-effective, and far easier to install as it is merely a matter of surrounding the plastic road gully in concrete. The 300 x 600 gully has an outlet of 110mm to go to the 110mm underground drainage pipe and other drainage pipe fittings, whereas the larger gullys have an outlet to go to the 160mm underground drainage pipe & fittings.
We stock a wide range of road gullies to ensure that you have access to the best options for your drainage needs.
