A coupler is designed to connect two lengths of MDPE pipe, using just compression fittings to hold it in place. The nature of the compression joint means it’s essential to use a pipe liner in any pipe you’re using MDPE fittings with – to prevent over-tightening and accidentally crushing the pipe.

Fitting a compression coupler to a MDPE pipe is fairly simple – but it’s obviously essential that you stop or cap the water supply before you attempt any cutting of pipes or addition of fittings.

With the water supply capped, you can cut your MDPE pipe – ideally with pipe cutters.

When your pipe is de-burred (and ideally chamfered for pipe sizes over 40mm) your can attach the fitting. To do so, you should loosen the plastic outer bolt until roughly half the thread is visible. Then, push the MDPE water pipe into place – through the nut, split ring, and o-ring.

With the pipe firmly located, you can then hand-tighten the nut – although for pipe sizes over 40mm it’s advisable to use a pipe wrench.

This process should be repeated for the other side, and when complete, the connection will provide a watertight seal that, depending on the size of the fitting, could potentially stand up to 16-25 bar of pressure.
