What are flap valves?

As well as preventing rising water entering your property, one way valves or ‘flap valves’ also prevent rats and other rodents using the plastic drainage pipe as a point of entry – since the stainless steel flap valve will open with pressure coming out of the property – but the flap valve cannot be open with pressure from the other side. As a result, rodents that need to use flap valves as a means of escape can – but they will not be able to re-enter through the flap valve.

It’s worth knowing that non return flap valves that use a stainless steel mounted flap like these are sometimes referred to as ‘check valves’ – but that’s not strictly accurate. Check valves use a true internal valve which completely eliminates any chance of contamination – and are therefore required if you need to meet high levels of health and safety or buildings standards.
