How does a tank connector work?
A tank connector is a quick and simple (but very effective) solution for when you need to connect MDPE pipe to any kind of tank.
The part is made up for 4 distinct sections – the overall threaded body with the compression fitting, 2 rubber washers, and a nut that sits on the ‘wet’ side (inside) of the tank.
You’ll need to make a hole in your tank to fit the part – and you’ll need to make sure the hole is a neat fit around the threaded section of the connector. When inserted with washers at either side, the tightened retaining nut creates a watertight seal around the point at which the connector enters the tank.
The compression fitting on the tank connector
With the connector fitted, you can now join an MDPE pipe to the connector in the same way you would with any other compression fitting.
First, you should tidy up the cut you’ve made on the MDPE pipe – and it’s a good idea to chamfer the end if you’re working with a pipe over 40mm in diameter. Slacken the compression nut on the dry side of the fitting until you can see roughly half of the threaded section it hides – then – after inserting the correct size pipe liner into your MDPE length, push the pipe into place – in the middle of the nut, the split ring, and the o-ring.
When it’s neatly seated, you can hand-tighten the compression nut – tightening the compression fitting around the pipe. Again, hand tight is fine for pipes up to a size of 40mm – but for anything bigger, you’ll need to use a pipe wrench to make sure everything’s tight.
