What are road gullies?
Road gullies are a water management component, designed to collect surface water in the street, and after directing that water towards entering the system, carries water to the underground drainage branch where it is then taken to a watercourse, storm drain or soakaway. Road gullies have mix sockets to twinwall connections, making them a flexible solution for a wide range of applications, including airports, motorways to car parks and car parks and more.
The road gully also includes a trap to prevent unpleasant odours, in addition to preventing sediment from entering the channel drainage system. A road gully is simply a small chamber covered by a metal grating located in the gutter of a roadway. It’s used to collect surface water in the road and are the responsibility of the regional councils Highways Authority – although road gullies that are installed on private property or a business park (sometimes referred to as yard gullies) are obviously the responsibility of the property owner – and that responsibility for those yard gullies and other components continues through the drainage system to the point it connects with the main sewer infrastructure and goes on to sewage treatment plants.
What are road gullies made of?
Up until 1990 or so, road gullies and yard gullies tended to be big items of clayware, but their inherent fragility was always a problem. They were slowly replaced with heavy duty pre-cast concrete elements, which are considerably stronger but also much heavier – requiring serious site equipment to get them located. The larger 450mm diameter units weigh a lot more than just one operative can be reasonably expected to handle, and so they will have to be craned into place by an excavator.
These days, durable road gullies are usually manufactured from HDPE – which makes them much lighter, much more cost effective, and far easier to install as it is merely a matter of surrounding the plastic road gully in concrete.
