Why do you need an end cap for a land drain?

When a land drainage pipe is intended to move problem surface water, you might wonder why you would want to cap the land drain pipe that’s carrying the water away from the problem area.

It all comes down to the rate of water flow.

The perforations in land drain piping can only cope with a certain amount of water – and a heavy water flow will mean that the perforations are overwhelmed. This is the reason a 100mm land drain should be laid at a 1:150 angle – so the water flow is not too aggressive.

However, in times of unprecedented rainfall or another sudden influx of water, an uncapped pipe could inadvertently just transport the standing water elsewhere, without effectively dispersing it although the full run of the trench. Even if this is unlikely, it makes sense to cap the pipe to ensure there’s no unforeseen issues.

How many do you need?
